In
industrialised countries Chlamydia trachomatis is the predominant infectious
agent causing sexually transmitted disease (STD). Both in men and women
chlamydial infections are often asymptomatic or produce only mild and non-specific
signs and symptoms. In women chlamydial infection can lead to life-threatening
ectopic pregnancies and infertility.
